През 1979г. на Световната административна радио конференция (WARC) на Международния съюз по далекосъобщения (ITU), са определени честотни диапазони за радиоастрономически наблюдения. Най-ниските два диапазона обикновено се използват за наблюдения на Слънцето и Юпитер; диапазоните 73, 150 и 406 MHz са доста популярни за търсене и наблюдение на пулсари, а диапазона 1400 MHz се използва за наблюдение на „водородната линия”.

На XXI-ото Генерално събрание на Международния астрономически съюз (IAU)
(Буенос Айрес, 23 юли – 1 август 1991) астрофизиците внимателно прегледали най-важните спектрални линии. IAU съставя списък на тези спектрални линии, съгласно таблицата по долу. IAU е инициирал необходимостта от защита на тези честотни диапозони от честотни и хармонични излъчвания, особено от космически предаватели.

- Ако забележка 2) или забележка 4) не са опоменати, диапазона на доплеровото отклонение на честотата, съответства на радиални скорости от +/- 300 km/s (съответстващи на излъчвания, които се среща в нашата галактика).
- Необходимо е увеличаване на диапазона от към ниската честота от 1400 до 1427 MHz, за да се позволи доплеровото отклонение на HI (водородната линия), да бъде наблюдавано от далечните галактики.
- Настоящото международно разпределение не е фиксирано в целия свят. За повече информация Виж: ITU-R Radio Regulations за по-подробна информация.
- Тъй като тези честоти се използват и за наблюдение на други галактики, посочените честотни диапазони включват доплерови оклонения, съответстващи на скорости до 1000 km/s. Трябва да се отбележи, че HI „водородната линия” е наблюдавана при честоти на червеното изместване до 500 MHz, някои линии от най-разпространените молекули са открити в галактики със скорости до 50 000 km/s, което съответства на намаляване на честотата до 17%.
- Има шест тясно разположени линии, свързани с тази молекула на тази честота. Изброената група е достатъчно широка, за да позволи наблюдение на всичките шест линии.
- Този ред не е споменат в ITU-R Radio Regulations.
Допълнителен списък на важни спектрални линии в милиметровите вълни
При подготовката на Световната конференция по радиосъобщения 2000 г., WRC-2000, която преразглежда разпределението на честотите над 71 GHz, работната група е проучила всички известни преходи в милиметрови и субмилиметрови вълни. Те са избрали ограничен брой астрофизически линии (най-важните спектрални линии). Този списък допълва предишния.

Съгласно чл. 8. на закона за електронните съобщения, Министерският съвет по предложение на Съвета по националния радиочестотен спектър приема Национален план за разпределение на радиочестотния спектър и го обнародва в “Държавен вестник“.
